Most copier companies get a set number of units each year they can use for demo pricing. By demo units, we’re not talking about the ones on the showroom floor. Sometimes they can buy and flip a copier to make some extra money on a few deals.

All manufacturers have a demo copier program of some sort. If you were to buy a copier off of the demo program, you can buy it for much cheaper than you would a standard model. The problem is that copier dealerships only get a few of each model, so they have to use them wisely.

As per the word “demo,” sometimes they have to use these copiers to run demos. Other times, they’re hoping for a tremendous deal.

Why Do Copier Reps Keep Demo Pricing a Secret?

For selling a new copier, a sales rep will get what’s called a “spiff” from a manufacturer for selling a new copier, which can be as high as $400 per sale.

However, there is one notable exception to this rule: demo units don’t qualify for spiffs. In other words, they pass up an extra $400 on their paychecks if you buy a demo unit from them.

Copier reps may give a deal on a demo copier for a close friend, but for the average person off the street, that’s unlikely to happen. The rep will take the spiff unless they have to use the demo to get the sale in the first place.

How Much Money Could You Save by Buying a Demo Unit?

By asking about a demo unit and letting the rep know you’re looking for a good deal, you can save yourself at least 10% on your copier purchase.

Even if a demo unit isn’t available for purchase, you send a strong signal to your copier rep that you care about how much the copier costs. Thus, you are more likely to get a fair price from him than if you would’ve asked for a quote right out of the gate.
